Meet Barry Meskin, Principal, Patent and Trade Marks Attorney

“Providing commercially relevant patent & trade mark advice is of the utmost importance. Taking the time to understand how intellectual property will create revenue for a business ensures it is truly an investment in the business and not simply a box to be ticked.”

– Barry Meskin, Principal, Patent and Trade Marks Attorney

With a background in electrical engineering, Barry worked as a systems engineer designing voice and data communication networks prior to qualifying as a patent and trade mark attorney in 2002. As a patent attorney, he focused on protecting electrical / medical devices and ICT inventions with a particular interest in gaming and gaming machine technology. His prior exposure to technological manufacturing, coupled with his focus on software and computer design, enabled him to understand the specific hardware of video poker, bingo and casino systems required to function within legislative criteria. He qualified and worked at one of the largest patent and trade mark attorney firms in Australia before moving in-house to manage the IP portfolio for the Australian subsidiary of a US listed gaming manufacturer (now owned by Scientific Games).

Barry subsequently set up his own firm while also actively advising a number of other SME companies in the wholesale watch, jewellery and fashion industry. Transitioning from IP to commercial and back again has afforded Barry a coalface understanding of strong brand and trademark value. It is this marriage that affords Barry his unique position in the industry. Having worked with a number of medical device clients who develop and manufacture products including massage devices, heart rate monitors, dementia and fragile patient care, Barry has worked tirelessly with his clients to ensure their interests are protected and exceeded, both legally and commercially.
Known for his approachability, Barry combines big firm, in-house and real world commercial experience. He focuses on obtaining commercially relevant outcomes for his clients by asking two simple questions: what do they want? And: how can I help them receive it?

On the weekends, Barry works his other fulltime job as a professional dad, taking his children to soccer games and coaching enthusiastically from the sidelines.
